The Sundarbans biosphere, formed by three main rivers, Ganga, Meghna, and Brahmaputra, is the largest delta in the world, consisting of a complex intertidal network of rivers, creeks, marshes, mudflats and alluvial floodplains.

Due to the current accelerating nature of climatic change and anthropogenic activities, the area's ecology has been disturbed.

About 40% of the 10,300 km² Sundarbans delta lies in West Bengal, and rest 60% is in Bangladesh.

There are 135 islands in the delta, out of which 35 are inhabited.
